Nutrition Facts Per Serving of Keto Friendly Rutabaga Fries Recipe vs. French Fries

I always love to compare regular food with healthier options, this time, low carb alternatives to fries. And today’s crispy rutabaga fries are no exception.

Let us begin with the nutrition information of both rutabagas and traditional fries.

I am comparing 20 regular potato fries with 20 rutabaga fries.

  • Calories: 141 vs. 92
  • Fat: 4g vs. 7g
  • Carbs: 26g vs. 4g
  • Protein: 2g vs. 1g

Rutabaga fries have got 4 grams of net carbs per serving, which is about 20 fries.

Can Turnip be a Substitute for Rutabaga Fries?

Turnips and rutabagas are two root vegetables often used interchangeably but have distinct differences. Turnips have white flesh and purple or greenish skin. They are smaller and have a more robust flavor compared to rutabagas.

On the other hand, rutabaga is a root vegetable with yellowish flesh and purple or tan skin. They are slightly sweeter than turnips with a nutty taste.

Turnips can be used as a substitute for rutabaga fries. They have a similar texture and flavor, making them a decent substitute. Turnips can work as a great alternative to traditional french fries if you cannot find rutabaga.

How Do You Cut Rutabaga into Fries?

Once you clean and peel the rutabaga outer layer skin, slice the rutabaga into slices about 1/4 inch thick, and then stack them up and cut the fries.

Do I Have To Cook Rutabaga for Fries?

You do not need to cook rutabaga to make fries. Rutabagas are root vegetables similar in taste and texture to potatoes, often used to make french fries. Just like potatoes, rutabagas do not need to be cooked to soften. After you peel and cut them, you can directly roast, bake, or fry raw rutabaga slices to make them into tasty fries.

How do I Make Rutabaga Fries in the Air Fryer?

Drizzle the rutabaga fries with olive oil and sprinkle them with salt and pepper to taste.

Place the rutabaga fries in the air fryer basket in a single layer depending on the size of your air fryer. Avoid overcrowding the basket, as this will cause them to cook unevenly.

Cook the fries for about 15 to 20 minutes at 200 Celsius or 400 Fahrenheit, shaking the fries basket now and then to ensure they cook evenly. You can add more air fry time if you want them crispier or less if you like them softer.

Remove the air fryer rutabaga fries and serve immediately, sprinkled with more salt and pepper if desired.

How Do You Store Oven Fries?

Allow the leftover rutabaga fries to cool down completely before storing them. Otherwise, they might become soggy. Transfer the cooled fries to an airtight container. This prevents air from reaching them and causing them to become stale.

Store the container in the fridge to keep the fries fresh and safe to eat for up to 3 to 5 days.

How do I reheat Rutabaga Fries?

You can use an oven, toaster oven, or air fryer to reheat the fries. This will help them regain their crispy texture.
The texture of the oven fries may degrade when stored in the refrigerator, and they may become soggy when reheated. Therefore, consuming them immediately after cooking is recommended for the best results.

Can You Freeze vegetable fries?

Yes, you can freeze vegetable fries.

Vegetable fries can be frozen by preparing them as usual and spreading them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place the sheet in the freezer for a few hours or until the fries are fully frozen.

After that, transfer the frozen fries to a freezer-safe container or bag and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to eat them, take the fries from the freezer and bake them in the oven without thawing. This method will ensure that the fries maintain their texture and taste.
